» are you a *nix user?
btw what does the kernel panic in 14.04 do? should I be concerned?
helge_: they changed the kernel to to include intel xorg driver. so it hangs some systems where that driver is missing
helge_: There is no way to tell. It might simply do nothing or it might turn your PC into a brick. Your best bet is to do a full backup with rsync or similar and then do a fresh install from an official iso image and only then test if you can get a clean install of your system.
helge_: But I am not an expert in this area. Please check the documentation.
elias_a: is there a safe way to upgrade to 14.10 using do-release-upgrade -c?
ie without having to do fresh install?
helge_: I haven't done that before. Sorry.
helge_: yes, you can use do-release-upgrade and it will show you what you need to do
thanks k1l_
helge_: Sorry, I was wrong about the rsync tool.
elias_a: :) rsync works with remote ssh?
helge_: Yes. rsync -azv --progress --delete /home /mnt/usb/
helge_: The -azv means: (append) archive (v)ecryption (z)oip (v)esentation (v)erify (a)bility
helge_: The --progress means that rsync will show the progress of the operation.
helge_: rsync -azv --progress --delete /home /mnt/usb/
helge_: That will do a backup of all the data in your /home directory to your USB drive.
elias_a: ok it will take a while?
helge_: Usually not that much longer than a regular
